The Earliest Days of NASA

Maria Popova, at Brain Pickings, happened upon a treasure trove of early NASA (and its airplane-only predecessor NACA) archive photos. They are really something. From biplanes to the Mercury capsule, pre-1950 aeronautics seemed to live by the motto of “If we build it, then we can go there.” That’s a sentiment we could use a bit more of.

I have this friend I made in October 2011 while briefly involved with Occupy Austin, and we met as we were being dragged through the city hall plaza towards a prison bus for Travis County Jail in zip tie cuffs. When they finally finished processing all 37 of us total at 6 AM, she and I ended up in cells next to each other. We sang chants and complained about the bitchy officer in charge of our cell block to keep up each other’s spirits until we got out.

Since then I’ve mostly just maintained contact via Facebook and bumped into her around town on occasion. One time I bought pot from an ex-girlfriend of hers.

I suppose I just feel like this is an interesting bond to share with someone. It was a pretty scary experience we shared, and I feel comfortable having done so with her. I feel like in a way we both carry that experience with us, like comrades as prisoners of war, we’ve moved on with our lives but there’s always that memory. You don’t know each other, but you know you fought for the same cause. Because of this, it’s not particularly necessary to jump through the hoops of getting to know each other one typically goes through upon meeting someone new. I think that’s pretty neat. I like the people I’ve met.

MBARI’s research expeditions sometimes yield encounters with extraordinary animals. During MBARI’s 2003 expedition to the Gulf of California, scientists spotted this massive jelly known as Stygiomedusa gigantea 1,300 meters below the surface of the Gulf. Its enormous reddish brown bell stretched about a meter (three feet) across and its oral arms were at least three meters (10 feet) long.

The researchers also collected a small fish in the genus Thalassobathia that was swimming over the jelly’s bell and among its billowing oral arms. In over 20 years of deep-sea dives, MBARI researchers have only seen Stygiomedusa jellies three times, so finding this drifting behemoth provided a truly memorable experience.
